North Mississippi Allstars: “Keep the Devil Down”

Posted on April 8, 2016June 5, 2017 by Max Shores

I shot this video back in 2010 but haven’t made it public until today. Like many other videos here it comes from the annual North Mississippi Hill Country Picnic.

I’ve shot a lot of video there. Some of it turns out and some of it doesn’t. When I posted several songs from the North Mississippi Allstars 2010 set at the picnic, I reckoned that this one just didn’t turn out. I wasn’t happy with my camera angle. I didn’t like the background.

I’m liking it now so I’ll share it.

Dirty Red’s got his pockets full of them things
Standing on a corner in Holly Springs
They busted Dirty Red in Hickory Flat, y’all
Old Dirty is a soldier, Red ain’t no rat

If you raise the devil
It can’t keep the devil down
And now I’ve found
The starry crown

If you raise the devil
It can’t keep the devil down
Don’t look him in the eye
The devil is alive

Them things got me snapping like a fighting dog
Drinking gun powder from a rotten log
Old habits die hard, I’m damn sure stuck in my way
It’s the nature of the beast that one of these days

I’m a gonna raise the devil
It can’t keep the devil down
If you’ve found
The starry crown

And you raise a devil
It can’t keep the devil down
Don’t look him in the eye
The devil is alive

If you raise the devil
It can’t keep the devil down
And now I’ve found
The starry crown

If you raise the devil
It can’t keep the devil down
Don’t look him in the eye
The devil is alive
